What’s going on at the Freedom Skatepark?
The Freedom Skatepark is running Concrete Jungle Foundation’s Edu-Skate Programme. This programme uses skateboarding as a tool to stimulate personal and community development in developing communities around the world. This programme focuses on:
Edu-Skate Personal Development
~Soft skills: we work on soft skills through the programme Edu-Skate, which aims at transfering the life-skills you learn in skateboarding like perseverance, respect, courage, and a supportive attitude to life in general. The classes are free of charge for youth ages 6-16.
~Hard skills: CJF’s Planting Seeds Programme provides paid apprenticeship placements and jobs for local adolescents.
Edu-Skate Community Development
~Soft skills: we believe a skatepark can be a powerful place that brings people together and timulates positive socialization. One of the biggest aims of the Freedom Skatepark is ensuring it is an accessible, positive and safe space that nurtures an engaged community to grow around it.
~Hard skills: every month we organize a community activity to bring the community together and work on projects that need to be done around the park. These activities are aimed at stimulating a sense of ownership for the skatepark community, as well as providing opportunities to gain experience in the skills involved in these activities like carpentry, gardening and event management. Depending on the volunteers and initiatives, we also organize workshops for the youth during the weekends and smaller community jobs with similar aims.
